What Is Polyvagal Theory?

Try this:

  • Slowly look around your environment.

  • Notice colors, shapes, sounds, and details around you.

  • Allow your eyes to soften rather than constantly scanning.

  • Take a moment to acknowledge any signs of safety or comfort around you.

This practice helps remind your nervous system that the present moment is different from past experiences of stress.

2. Longer Exhale Breathing

Slow, intentional breathing is one of the simplest ways to support the vagus nerve and communicate safety to the body.

Try this:

  • Inhale gently through your nose for 4 seconds.

  • Exhale slowly for 6–8 seconds.

  • Repeat for several minutes.

A longer exhale encourages the body to shift away from a heightened stress response and toward a more regulated state.

3. Humming, Singing, and Vocalization

The vagus nerve connects with areas involved in the throat, breathing, and vocalization. Practices like humming, singing, and gentle vocal sounds may help create calming sensory input for the nervous system.
